Advantages & Disadvantages
In
today’s society the internet is used for many things versus back than when it
was just developing. Today we have social networking, gps, certain apps, online
banking, and etc... All at the palm of our hands. I believe people rely on the internet a bit
too much in our generation but there are some advantages that come along with
it and as well as some disadvantages. One of the advantages of internet use
that I see to be helpful is communication. I find it extremely helpful that I can
send a message free of charge to one of my peers in Europe versus paying the
$1.25 for sending a text message to them. For example, I use Facebook for that
purpose and on occasion Skype to do video calls. Another advantage that I see
is I can virtually look up anything I want and when I want on my smart phone
thanks to the internet. If I’m in a city where I am not familiar with I can
look up all and any attractions, restaurants, and hotels that are near me as
well as any type of information that I am interested in. This is where one of
the disadvantages comes into place. Now that
I have everything through a simple search engine as “Google” I choose what I want
to remember and what I don’t really care for can be brought up in a matter of
seconds to me. The third advantage that I
see is online shopping but it comes along with a disadvantage. The good about
shopping online is everything is at my finger tips and can be sent right to my
house within days. I don’t have to go stand in line at a store, deal with a bunch
of ignorant people, and have the hassle of bringing it home. But the
disadvantage that comes along with this is people’s identity can be stolen,
bank accounts get hacked into, and then it just becomes a big hassle. The last
disadvantage that I see the internet being as is it leads to social isolation,
obesity, and depression in young youths that are growing up with it. In September
26, 2010, industry chamber Assocham explains that teenagers in the group ages
of 12-18 who use internet over 5 hours daily are the most vulnerable to these
risks.

You made a lot of really good points in your post. I especially agree with how you prefer messaging someone in a different country over facebook rather than sending a text message. I am all about saving money hahah. I also agree with online shopping being a disadvantage at some times because of identity theft. I only do online shopping very rarely and only purchase from secure sites. J. Craig Anderson states on usatoday.com that, "credit-card data theft is exploding, increasing 50% from 2005 to 2010."
ReplyDeleteWell said Omar, you make very valid points on how the Internet is a great advantage for us but at the same time has disadvantages. If you use it in moderation i believe it can be beneficial but if its over used then thats where some disadvantages fall into play. Online shopping is one thing that i do a lot more because of conveinence and not having to deal with people in the store. I think our generation is smart about Internet use to a degree because some of us know that you can be vulnerable and risk a lot when you spend most of your time soaked up on a computer or online. Hopefully somewhere down the road people will be able to find that common ground and only use it for an advantage. You have a fantastic day sir.
